VTCT Level 1 Diploma in Hairdressing (QCF)

Course Outline:

This qualification that has been designed to introduce you to the complete range of practical hairdressing skills and will act as the foundation for you to progress onto the next level of vocational learning at level 2.

 Introducing you to the hair and beauty industries, how to present a professional image and working with others in the salon, salon reception, develop your creative skills in the art of dressing hair, applying temporary colour, create a hair and beauty image, provide effective shampooing and conditioning hair, how to display retail stock and the creative art of styling women's hair.

The purpose of this qualification is to prepare you to progress to the next level of vocational learning at level 2, specifically you will be able to undertake:

Course Content:

  • An Introduction to the Hair and Beauty Sector
  • Presenting a Professional Image in the Salon
  • The Art of Dressing Hair
  • Health and Safety in the Salon
  • Working with Others in the Hair and Beauty Sector
  • Create a Hair and Beauty Image
  • Colour the Hair using Temporary Colour
  • Salon Reception
  • Create and maintain retail displays in the salon
  • Shampoo and conditioning
  • Styling women's hair

Assessment Methods:

Students are continually assessed throughout the course through practical and written tests and assignments.

Further training/development:

Career opportunities exist in a variety of contexts as a Level 1 qualified Hairdresser, including:

- Working as a Junior in a salon

  • Working towards a level 2 qualification in Hairdressing and or Barbering

Course costs:

£1400 for 1 year course (may be subject to change)

Students under the age of 19 are government funded, funding may be available for over 19’s depending on circumstances – ask for details on application.

Course entry requirements:

There are no formal prerequisite qualifications that you must have prior to undertaking this qualification however, a GCSE in English, Maths and Science are preferable.

Course duration:          1 academic year from September
