Wellbeing and Mental Health

At The Astley Cooper School, we recognise that a healthy mind is essential for every young person to thrive and achieve their full potential. Supporting the mental health and wellbeing of our students is just as important as promoting their physical health.

We are committed to creating a supportive, nurturing environment where students feel safe, valued, and able to talk openly about their wellbeing. Ensuring our students are happy, healthy, and ready to learn is one of our top priorities.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) defines emotional wellbeing as “a state of wellbeing in which the individual realises their own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to their community.”

At The Astley Cooper School, we are committed to creating a genuinely inclusive ethos where every member of our community feels valued, supported, and able to thrive. Our aim is to nurture an environment in which students can develop not only academically but also emotionally and socially.

We want our students to feel prepared not just for their time in education, but for the challenges they may encounter throughout life. By teaching key skills that build resilience, emotional awareness, and self-management, we strive to equip them with the tools they need to navigate important life events with confidence and positivity.

How we support positive Mental Health

Our Dedicated Mental Health Lead triages all wellbeing referrals and ensures students receive the most appropriate support for their needs. Working closely with staff, parents, and external agencies, the Lead coordinates in‑school interventions, signposts to specialist services, and helps maintain a whole‑school approach to positive mental health. This role is central to creating a safe, supportive environment where every student can feel listened to, valued, and equipped to thrive.
